2010 Household Hazardous Waste
Household Hazardous Wastes (HHW) are those wastes produced in our households that are hazardous in nature, but that are not regulated as hazardous wastes under federal and state laws. Included are such items as old paints and paint related products, pesticides, pool chemicals, drain cleaners, and degreasers and other car care products. Such consumer waste products, if carelessly managed, can create environmental and public health hazards. Consumers are strongly encouraged to seek environmentally friendly ways of managing their household hazardous waste.
Since 1998, the Cumberland County Recycling & Waste Authority has offered a HHW program in an attemp to give the residents of Cumberland County an alternative disposal method for these types of wastes. This historically has consisted of a drop-off program where residents were required to bring HHW material to a certain location on a certain day. The results of the program are presented below.
2010 HHW Program Details
Coming soon! A new approach to managing household hazardous waste. CCR&WA is currently negotiating contract details for a new type of HHW collection program, one in which HHW collection will be offered on a continual basis and materials will be picked up directly at the home. Similar to programs in Dauphin and Lebanon Counties, a resident needing to dispose of HHW will be able to call a toll free number to request a collection. The Contractor will make arrangements to deliver to the caller a collection kit and will also schedule a collection date to remove the HHW materials.
CCR&WA is transitioning to this type of program for several reasons:
- To increase convenience to residents wanting to dispose of HHW other than through their normal trash service. Residents will no longer have to wait for an annual drop-off event.
- To have residents choosing this type of service for the management of their HHW share in the cost of doing so. CCR&WA does not use general fund tax dollars to support its programs. Instead, a fee on waste had been collected until court rulings stripped CCR&WA of its ability to do so. CCR&WA is now operating on reserve funding. Household hazardous waste is expensive to manage through hazardous waste companies. The cost per collection for this new program will be approximately $110. CCR&WA will pay $90 and require the user to pay $20.
