North Newton Township
A truly cooperative arrangement, North Newton Township and the Cumberland County Recycling & Waste Authority (CCR&WA) have partnered to provide a recycling drop-off at the Township's municipal building located at 433 Oakville Road, Shippensburg, PA 17257.
Following inquiries from Penn Township and West Pennsboro Township, CCR&WA approached North Newton Township about the possibility of hosting three recycling containers at their township building. North Newton Township was interested and worked with CCR&WA to adopt an agreement. North Newton Township will monitor the containers at their site and drive CCR&WA's roll-off truck to transport the containers, with recyclables, to a materials recovery facility.
Recyclables will be collected "Single Stream" and then be transported to a materials recovery facility for processing. Single Stream recycling allows recyclers to deposit recyclable paper, plastic, glass, steel, and aluminum materials into a single container for collection. This allows for greater payloads per vehicle, which reduces the energy and costs required to collect the recyclables. After collection, transport, and unloading, the mixed recyclable stream is processed into sorted recyclable materials using state-of-the-art equipment.

How should I prepare my recyclables?
- All of your recyclables can be mixed together. No sorting is required.
- To ensure obtaining the maximum capacity of each container, cardboard must be flattened and plastic bottles, aluminum cans, and steel cans should be crushed.
- DO NOT tie or bind any recyclables(s), including newspaper and cardboard.
- NO plastic bags whatsoever. Plastic bags are detrimental to the sorting equipment. If you collect your recyclables in plastic bags, you must remove the recyclables from the plastic bags before depositing in the containers and take the plastic bags along with you.
- All materials must be placed loose in the containers. DO NOT leave recyclables in bags, boxes, or bundled with string/tape. If you bring recyclables in paper bags/boxes and do not wish to keep the paper bags/boxes, you must first dump the recyclables into the container. You can then toss the empty paper bag or box (flatten first) into the container.
- Recyclable containers (plastic, glass, steel, aluminum) should be empty and rinsed clean. Remove all plastic caps and discard. Metal lids should be removed but kept with the recyclables. Recyclable paper should be dry and clean.
Anything else?
- In regards to plastics, we only take plastic bottles, jugs, and jars. NO plastic bags, wrap, film or any other plastic of any kind is accepted.
- DO NOT place or leave recyclables outside of the containers.
- DO NOT leave behind trash or litter.
- DO NOT try to recycle items that are not accepted.
The North Newton Township Drop-Off Recycling Site is a cooperative effort between North Newton Township, the Cumberland County Recycling & Waste Authority, and the County of Cumberland. The program is intended to offer and increase recycling opportunities in northwestern Cumberland County where curbside recycling collection is limited. The site, however, is open to all recyclers. Costs for the recycling containers at the site have been funded in part by a Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection Act 101 Section 902 Recycling Grant.
