HOTEL ROOM TAX ORDINANCE 2019-5
ADOPTED MARCH 12, 2001 AND AMENDED OCTOBER 21, 2019
Purpose: Commissioners of Cumberland County established a Hotel Room Rental Tax
for the purpose of funding tourist promotion in the County.
IN A NUTSHELL WHO MUST COMPLY
It is obvious in most cases who must Register, Collect (rate of 3%), Report and Pay this tax. Establishments that are Hotels, Bed & Breakfasts, Homesteads, Guest Houses, Inn, and others.
As the tourism industry continues to expand, a number of County Property Owners are renting out their homes, apartments, or other properties to provide hotel occupancy services. Under State Law and County Ordinance anyone who for money or other consideration provides sleeping accommodations to the general public for periods of less than 30 consecutive days is responsible for collecting the County Hotel Tax. These others include lodging arranged through online brokers, social media hosting sites, and third parties; most notably Air BnB, VRBO, Home Away, and real estate agents. Many of the definitions in the County Ordinance; "Hotel, Occupancy, Operator, Consideration, Patron, Transaction, Transient," apply to the collection and remittance of this tax.

VISTORS TO OUR COUNTY
If you are a person who pays considerations for the occupancy of a room or rooms within the County, you will be charged a 3% County Hotel Tax on the room rental rate.
