The safe disposal of medication is near and dear to the Cumberland-Perry Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition. In 2008, in conjunction with the Cumberland County Recycling and Waste Department, the Coalition began addressing the disposal of medication by holding take-back events designed to keep medications out of medicine cabinets, off the streets, and out of the waterways. In four short years at eight events, over 3000 pounds of medication were collected and safely disposed.
Eventually these take-back events were suspended in lieu of the United States Drug Enforcement Administration's (DEA) national prescription drug take-back events which began in the fall of 2010. In 2014, the Cumberland County District Attorney's Office launched the installation of secure medication collection boxes throughout Cumberland County. A complete listing of all Cumberland County medication collection boxes can be found on the Department of Drug and Alcohol Programs website. A downloadable listing and medication disposal guidelines are also available from Cumberland-Perry Drug & Alcohol Commission.
